SoftwareAdvice.com has posted 5 Ways Physicians Can Profit from Using an EMR. The list is pretty good:
- Stop paying staff to manage paper –imagine being able to find information as easily as you can do on Google
- Reduce malpractice premiums –improved documentation helps the defense at trials and can also improve follow-up with patients
- Stop downcoding and submit claims with confidence –although it’s important to make sure what gets put into the EHR is truthful
- Participate in pay-for-performance programs –which are much more feasible with electronic records
- Get your EMR purchase subsidized –your local hospital may be willing to foot the bill: up to 85 percent

The biggest thing, in my opinion, is increased efficiency. We have very much succeeded in being a profitable practice, in large part due to our EMR (not despite it).
Here is a post I made on this subject: http://distractible.org/2008/04/08/and-i-feel-fine/

100% agree with Rob — they left out the biggest opportunity with increased efficiency. You can’t forget about patients if you use the EMR correctly.

Yes, I think Bob is right, efficiency is just very important.
